Zoos are foundations for keeping animals in enclosures such as cages for the purposes of conservation, study, or public exhibition. Although the animals receive specialized treatment while in the zoo like grooming, constant food supply, and medical care, it is unethical to restrict the animal behavior since it infringes on their rights. The institutions regard the animals as property and trade them at will without caring about their rights (Kuehn, 2002). Zoos create a prison environment for the animals, denying them their rights. In the wild, the animals enjoy the freedom of movement, socializing, enjoying resources such as food and space, breeding, and a natural habitat. On the contrary, keeping them in zoos deprives them of their natural habitat since the zoos are structured habitats with certain conditions different from the natural environment (Minteer and Collins, 2013).

Despite the fact that keeping the animals in zoos protects the endangered species from extinction, zoos could lead to species and population reduction. Space in the zoos is not as much as that in the wild; thus, the zoos cannot support a sufficient number of species necessary to sustain a population (Kuehn, 2002). Once animals are bred in a zoo, it is almost impossible to return them to the wild since they lack survival skills to endure the wild habitat (Minteer and Collins, 2013).

Zoos are valuable establishments for animals as they offer quality nutrition, care, and medical attention. However, the institutions deny the animals their fundamental rights and freedom since they create a prison environment. The animals confined in a zoo lack the freedom to socialize, breed, move freely, and a natural habitat (Kuehn, 2002). Thus, zoos are unethical to animals since the downsides of keeping them locked in greatly outweigh the benefits.

What do schools need to do to prepare students for the 21st Century?

Schools act as centers for improvement and transformation of people’s lives to become better in future. With the recent world that is dominated by the use of technology, knowledge of computers, smartphones or tablets remain crucial to enable accomplishment of the technological demands.    Knowledge of computers will help students to interact effectively with the world dominated by technology. Therefore, an attempt to enlighten students for 21st-century expectations calls for creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Teaching students about creativity will help them prepare for the 21st century. As discussed earlier, the century is characterized by the advancement of technology. Maneuvering through computers requires creativity that is also helpful in coming up with new software or applications. Exposing students to creative activities helps them to express whatever they learn in a new way. This keeps them prepared for the demands of the 21st century that are accompanied by many changes (Wan & Gut, 2011).

Another important factor for preparing students for the 21st century is helping them think critically. Research shows that critical thinking skills enable students to think past the normal simple information, and thus they gain the capability to solve critical problems. The 21st-century environment calls for critical thinking skills to make judgments based on proof presented within the ever changing environment (Arnold & Indiana University, Bloomington. 2007).

Moreover, collaboration or teamwork encourages students to discover for themselves all aspects affecting them. In this case, they feel empowered to learn and thus improve efforts directed to finding out new inventions that might be important to themselves as well as the society. Achieving the inspiration to think critically cannot succeed without the aspect of communication. Through communication, students can ask questions concerning areas they do not understand and their tutors can direct them appropriately (Stone & Lewis, 2012). Encouragement of communication leads to an inquiry-based classroom environment where students can motivate their learning through consultations to meet the demands of 21st century.

Some believe traditional male roles have changed a great deal since the end of World War II and that it has been accelerating for the past twenty years. Once the “Leave It To Beaver” stereotypical norm was completely embraced by society. The culture norm as reflected by “Leave It To Beaver”, stressed the father as the disciplinarian and the remote bread winner, whose primary contributions to family life were financial. Today some would believe this is no longer the case. Some have written that a father “… can be single or married; externally employed or stay-a- home; gay or straight; an adoptive or step-parent; and a more than capable caregiver to children facing physical or psychological challenges.” (The American Psychological Association, “The Changing Role of The Modern Day Father.”)

However, the evidence suggests many in our society still frown on the “stay-at-home” father. The LA Times recently reported on Brent Kroeger, a stay at home father/house husband. While he values his role, he is generally ashamed of his role, worrying about what friends think, and certainly not advertising his status in social media, and to a potential onslaught of ridicule. Emily Alpert Reyes, December 26, 2013, “‘Men are stuck’ in gender roles, data suggest”, Los Angeles Times. To say a stay at home Mom is not working because she does not work outside the home is a social faux pas, yet a man may not feel comfortable in polite society claiming the status of stay at home dad. Hence there is little evidence of meaningful change yet.

What does come to mine is the old adage: “the more things change, the more they stay the same”. It appears people need a sense of normalcy, and even as society changes, those that pioneer the change are always going to feel the backlash of societies resistance and anger by those that have invested so much of their reality into the change.

The media plays an important role in providing information, entertainment, as well as instilling values to the different members of the society. The undertaking of this roles is, however, marked with a lot of stereotyping. Wolska (2011) defines stereotyping as the act of judging a person or a group of people based on the opinions of others. In the process of passing out its message to the public, the media has been found to create stereotypes through their influence on the opinions and attitudes of the audience. Their strong ability to influence the public has had both positive and negative impacts, with the negative impacts raising a lot of concerns.

A good example of the role the media has played in promoting stereotypes is through commercials, whereby certain groups of people are generally described as one despite their individual differences. Women in commercials are, for example, mainly portrayed as those that promote daily sales and are mainly used in advertisements promoting cosmetics and domestic products, while men are mainly used in those adverts that market more highly ranked merchandises such as cars, investment opportunities, and products. Women are shown as those whose activities mainly revolve around the household environment, while men are seen to be more of outdoor people (Matthews, 2007). In the case of women, there is also the tendency to use slender women to advertise beauty products, thus associating beauty with being thin, a situation that has played a major role in promoting weight related disorders such as anorexia as people struggle to lose weight (ADL, 2014).

Dealing with media stereotypes calls for the public to understand the stereotypes and acquire viewing skills that will enable them to be more informed, and those that are not easily manipulated by what they hear, see or read (Wolska, 2011).

The debate on retiring age limitation has created international attention. Various countries have their rules and regulations governing the retirement age. This is per the rate of unemployment and the population of the concerned country. In my views, I totally oppose the point of compulsory retirement at the age of 65 because it treats the old as pariahs of society.

According to the U.S News survey report, only 37% of Americans were willing to retire at age 65 indicating that age is not a guarantee of ability or inability to work. 70 year old leaders and above, in fact, lead most countries and statistics indicates that they still have high chances of leading as compared to their young counterparts. This leaves most people marveling the intelligence that keep ahead such countries development wise.

With old aged comes skills and experience, which is why most employers prefer people with ten years experience in their businesses. With experience comes with perfections and such people produce quality works with minimal supervision. According to Odoki’s views in the Daily Monitor, he argued that old people retire while still energetic to work. Such energy ends up wasted instead.

As much as young people need employment, most of them will not go to work because of passion but because of money. This makes them choosy when it comes to employment, as most of them prefer flamboyant well-paying jobs. A society that forces aged to retire at 65 does not value its citizen. In case it is necessary for them to retire at 65, the government should find them means of getting income since the vice is detrimental to them. In conclusion, retirement should be voluntary, not compulsory.

Any individual who lives in a city knows about the escalating number of vehicles on the city roads. The cars cause air contamination and traffic jams as the economy continue to develop, thereby, increasing the access to cars as the population upsurges. In turn, the smoke produced by cars cause air pollution. However, the situation is being put under control by making private cars expensive to use and maintain. For instance, several countries impose taxes on cars that use city roads. Additionally, fees for parking vehicles in the urban areas and limitation of parking space in some particular areas have been employed to reduce congestion in the cities. Thus, commuters have begun seeing it viable to use buses and trains than their cars (Nikolaos, 2007). Another remedy is the construction of free car parks along the suburban train stations. The approach has proven to be successful in many cities by allowing commuters to drive to the train stations, park their vehicles and board trains to cities.

Also, it should be understood that private autos cannot convey numerous travelers at once yet they possess space on the road. As the number of cars increases in the street so does the traffic. As a result, human health is at stake due to air pollution. Thus, we should work towards getting rid of it at any expense. One way is to minimize the use of cars (Gubry, 2010)

On the contrary, public transport should be more comfortable and convenient to attract more commuters and reduce traffic congestion. Thus, making it more convenient will increase the number users, meaning that they will not use their cars, thereby; minimize the rate of air pollution. Besides, an increased number of public transport users translate into a decline in the number of cars along the streets.

Inequality with respect to infrastructure, education, and social development still feature in the current world. Poor nations languish in poverty, political instability while the first nations continue to grow economically due to globalization. The most pertinent question is: can the world donations and funding’s raise their status? In addition, what are the advantages and disadvantages of donor funding?

First, provision of donor aid to undeveloped nations creates dependency. Dependence on developed actions creates a platform for championing their ideologies and economic cartels that that favor their greedy interests. Politically, proliferation of arms, a major cause of political instability in undeveloped nations is a cause of setting up military bases of developed country’s proprietors (Burral et al., 2006). Through such platforms, the poor countries face unpatched exploitation from donors, especially in cases of clandestine intentions. Although the aids can never be underestimated, this instance presents the most prominent demerit of provision of donor aids to the fewer developed countries.

In contrast, provision of aids to the less developed nations offers with it a number of merits. Most of the people in these countries feel a tremendous lack of food and medicine, a top concern of humanitarian aid. Still, the humanitarian aid progresses the infrastructures and the economies of this third world countries opening them up (Svensson, 2013, p384). Furthermore, the international support enhances the pivotal education sector of the underdeveloped nations, which creates awareness on prevention of AIDS and from other social disease, prospecting a chance for ultimate development (Porter, 2011). Therefore, the international donor aid if put to efficient use presents numerous ways for growth in the underdeveloped nations.

Concisely, in comparing the merits and demerits of donor funding’s, the merits outweigh the demerits, showing a good chance for development of undeveloped nations.

Statistics demonstrate that most high-level jobs are done by men. In this era, the production advances broadly on gender equity. Hence, the government is demanded to energize a sure percentage of high-level jobs to be held for women.

The most critical qualification to use a worker in a high-level job is professionalism, not sex. High-level jobs require high performance and respectability, however when reserving some percentage of these jobs for a specific group of individuals a few issues can be raised. Today the majority of the right individuals are in wrong place due to lack of job opportunities in a nation. This is a direct result of the security of the economy (Beveridge, 2014).

Just like any job, high-level jobs should be awarded by qualification and merit, but not considering as a man or a woman. Individuals from both sexual orientations ought to be given equivalent chance to attempt to win sensibly with every other to land the positions. Giving uncommon support to a specific group to live in a sure percentage of high-level jobs can mean unfair process.

Many women surrender high positions because they require more opportunity for going through with their family. Obviously the higher positions are extremely demanding, however tedious. Responding to their nurturing natures, many women decide to commit a lot of their opportunity to their children and family.  Due to the protective nature the authorities might now and again postpone yet that individual can enlist someone else to deal with that work until she comes to work. This obviously demonstrates sexual orientation; separation has nothing to do.

The government doesn’t need to fulfill the demand by giving so as to save a sure percentage for women exceptional support in job fields (Heery& Kelly, 2008). Naming more women in work would not prompt improvement the nation. The benefit for the society is to unify men and women in a balanced way.

The Greek civilization has had a massive influence in the world over the past centuries. In fact, areas such as medicine, sexuality, astronomy, language, Bible, astrology, and psychology have been considerably changed and influenced by Greek culture and mythology (Bremmer, 2014). This is because the Greek mythology tried to explain reasons for the earth’s creation, occurrence of diseases and natural disasters.

For instance, the Greek myth has led to the development of many words in the English language. One of the phrases is arachnid: the scientific name of the spider. It is derived from the mythology of a beautiful woman called Arachne. According to the myth, Arachne was an excellent weaver who was condemned by goddess Athena. She was condemned into weaving webs for eternity when Athena turned her into a spider (Slater, 2014).

In astrology, all the twelve zodiac signs are also derived from the Greek mythology. For instance, Scorpio was a giant scorpion sent to kill Orion by Apollo while the giant crab sent to defeat Hercules by Hera was called Cancer. Furthermore, many constellations are named after Greek mythological creatures. An example of this is Orion’s Belt that is named after a mortal hunter named Orion (Foster, 2015).

Therefore, Greek mythology is still very relevant today. It has influenced many areas of human life over the centuries and still continues to do so even now. The English language has derived many of its words in this mythology. Science and medicine have also borrowed significantly from it. In fact, astronomy and astrology are the two sectors that have borrowed heavily from the Greek mythology. As such, as long as these areas in human life continue to borrow from ancient Greek mythology, it will remain relevant even in the future.

Technological advancements have resulted in portable wireless devices with both computing and communication capabilities. A study by Pew Research Center revealed that 93 percent of Americans have access to cellular phones and wireless devices (Smith , 2015). It also revealed that two-thirds of Americans use a smartphone (Smith , 2015).  Portable communication and computing devices have made communication and virtual transactions easier than ever before. However, the ease and convenience of portable communication devices also pose a threat to face-to-face human interaction. The fact that they are readily accessible means that there are no clear boundaries between chatting with friends on social media, texting, checking emails, virtual working or internet browsing and engaging in social interactions.

Modern communication devices are tearing the traditional social fabric apart. Face-to-face interaction is often marked by partial concentration due to the numerous distractions presented by the portable technological devices. Therefore, the connection of the interacting parties is weakened by the virtual connections with other people elsewhere. Texting or surfing while interacting with someone could also be interpreted as a show of rudeness or lack of interest in the person. Consequently, it may severe the relationship between the two parties. Children have not been left behind either. Nowadays children are often in front of a screen playing computer games. The current generation of children has poor social skills that can be linked to an addiction to computer games. A study by Attewell, Sauzo-Garcia and Battle (2003) revealed that heavy use of computers by children reduces their cognitive skills, self-esteem, and social skills.

Portable communication and computing devices are an inevitable. They enhance communication, information sharing and facilitate day-to-day transactions. However, there is a need to develop technology etiquette so that it does threaten face-to-face interaction.
